The second season of Nevada’s controversial black bear hunt ended Monday with 11 bears killed by hunters.
The 11th bear was killed Friday on the east side of the Pine Nut Mountains, said Carl Lackey, a bear biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
Unless another hunter killed a bear Monday and had yet to report it, it will be the last for the season, Lackey said.
The bear killed Friday, like nine others, was male. Only one of the 11 killed — the first, killed Sept. 15 — was female. Seven of the bears were taken by hunters using dogs. Opponents of the bear hunt are now pressing for a change in regulations prohibiting the use of dogs to hunt bears.
Regulations allow for up to 20 bears to be killed by hunters. During last year’s inaugural season, 14 bears were killed.
